About

On Sri Lanka’s Southern coast, PALM is a bold concept hotel that brings a slice of modernism to the Sri Lankan jungle. Built to stir the soul, PALM is a new breed of tropical lifestyle retreat with an all-day restaurant, bar, pool, concept store, and gym.

Merging soothing Sri Lankan minimalism with modern sustainable architecture and luxe amenities, the 6 A-Frame Cabanas, 2 Deluxe Suites on stilts amongst the treetops, and the 4-bedroom villa (the PALM Haus) are spread out across the four-acre site and feature floor-to-ceiling glass, cool concrete interiors, low linen-strewn beds, bespoke cane furniture, private patios or balconies, and showers under the open sky.

While the day away at the all day restaurant and bar pavilion or the 14m pool set amongst the lush green jungle, hop in a tuk tuk and go beach hopping, get a sweat on at PALM Fit, catch some waves at one of the many local breaks catering to all levels (or learn to surf with our surf partner Ticket to Ride), treat yourself to an in-room massage, or discover the local cuisine in and around Ahangama. Make sure to check PALM’s neighbours and friends.

Staying at PALM for longer? Plan a day trip or two, to UNESCO World Heritage Site Galle Fort, Hiriketiya, or go on Safari in Udawala or Yala.

Hotel Information

Miriam and Laurie opened PALM in 2019. They traced Miriam’s Sri Lankan roots, discovered a sprawling old coconut plantation between the mangroves and paddy fields of Ahangama and decided to swap their face paced Shoreditch lives for a more laid-back island life.

The boho spirit of south Sri Lanka’s beaches and surf breaks that first drew in the hippies and surfers in the 1960s seemed like the perfect place to create their own unique blend of urban-infused tropical architecture.

With the use of local materials, they revitalised a disused space that invites nature back in. Now, their own brand of urban-infused architecture blends in perfectly with its surroundings. “We wanted to spread the buildings across the land so our guests could disconnect and enjoy the quiet and serenity of their own space but still have a central place to mingle when they feel like it.”

Weather

The weather in the South of Sri Lanka

With changing weather patterns globally, the weather in Sri Lanka has become less predictable also, but here's our personal best bets:

December - February
Sunny + hot with the odd downpour

March - June
Sunny + hotter with a daily (welcome) downpour

July - September
Sunny + slightly less hot but with a daily downpour or two.

October - November
It's a gamble.

If you're an intermediate surfer, you may want to visit the South Coast between December and April to make the most of the waves. Weligama, Hiriketiya and Dewata work year round though.

December - April can be BUSY. Restaurants, bars, surf breaks will be packed and there will be lots of parties to dance the night away at. You will always find yourself a quiet beach though.

To experience the more authentic, sleepy nature of island life, come during the months of May to November. Many hospitality businesses (including PALM) operate year round.

Check the rates. Room rates fluctuate widely between the months. So if you like yourself a deal/gamble, consider coming during the monsoon months.
